Development of water-in-oil Pickering emulsions from sodium oleate surface-modified nano-hydroxyapatite

چکیده
The stabilisation of water-in-oil (W/O) Pickering emulsions is still a challenge for the scientific community. In this work, sodium oleate (SO) surface modified nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HAp) particles were produced and tested as W/O stabilisers. n-HAp presented wettability dependent on used SO content, switching from hydrophilic (initial state) to hydrophobic (one layer) back (two layers). with holding one layer (contact angle ∼90 °) showed their tight adsorption at water-oil interface (confocal analysis), maintained stability up 15 days. Overall work provides new developments in field emulsions, topic less studied than O/W, opening avenues several applications.

Pickering emulsions stabilized by surface-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles.
Unmodified Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles do not stabilize Pickering emulsions of a polar oil like butyl butyrate. In order to obtain stable emulsions, the Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles were modified by either carboxylic acid (RCOOH) or silane coupling agents (RSi(OC(2)H(5))(3)) to increase their hydrophobicity. The influence of such surface modification on the stability of the resultant Pickering emulsions...

A new approach to synthesis of cross-linked colloidosomes (microcapsules with a shell from colloidal particles) was developed on the basis of a peroxidized Pickering emulsion (an emulsion stabilized exclusively by peroxidized colloidal particles). Peroxidized latex particles were employed to ensure formation of Pickering emulsion. Free radical polymerization was used to convert droplets of a pe...
متن کاملAdsorption Dynamics in Pickering Emulsions
We investigate the adsorption dynamics of colloidal particles to a liquid/liquid interface. Such an analysis is important in the formation of Pickering emulsions. Using a free energy formulation that has been used for adsorption of surfactants, we obtain the time evolution of the surface coverage and dynamic surface tension. We estimate the characteristic time for adsorption, and show that it c...
متن کاملThermodynamically stable pickering emulsions.
We show that under appropriate conditions, mixtures of oil, water, and nanoparticles form thermodynamically stable oil-in-water emulsions with monodisperse droplet diameters in the range of 30-150 nm. This observation challenges current wisdom that so-called Pickering emulsions are at most metastable and points to a new class of mesoscopic equilibrium structures. Thermodynamic stability is demo...
متن کاملCapillary interactions in Pickering emulsions.
The effective capillary interaction potentials for small colloidal particles trapped at the surface of liquid droplets are calculated analytically. Pair potentials between capillary monopoles and dipoles, corresponding to particles floating on a droplet with a fixed center of mass and subjected to external forces and torques, respectively, exhibit a repulsion at large angular separations and an...
